Abstract

This research aims to analyze the use of conjunctions and modality in editorials of Kedaulatan Rakyat (KR) newspaper and its relevance in learning editorial texts in high school. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The data in this study are three titles of editorial text from the second week of November edition in Kedaulatan Rakyat newspaper. The results show that the use of conjunctions in editorials is dominated by coordinative and subordinative conjunctions to explain the logical relationship between arguments. The modalities that often appear are epistemic modalities that show the level of belief, as well intensional modalities that express expectations and as well as deontic modalities that express imperatives. These findings are relevant for learning editorial texts in high school, especially in improving students' ability to analyze argument structure and persuasive language.
