Abstract

The object of this study is All the Bright Places (2015), a young adult fiction novel which tells a story about two teenagers and their problems related to their mental illness. The interesting topic which became the main discussion in this study is how the female character of this novel, Violet Markey, using denial as her defence mechanism to cope grief on her sister and boyfriend’s death. To examine this topic, the researchers used descriptive qualitative method. This study found that in order to cope with Markey’s sister death, Markey used self-protective function of denial, while to cope with Finch’s death, her form of denial is by refusing to acknowledge his death.

Nariswari Hartati is a student in English Literature in Jenderal Soedirman University. Currently, she is in 7th semester. She takes literature as her major. She is interested in Pychoanalysis in literature, movie studies, and children's literature.

Mia Fitria Agustina, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman

Mia Fitria Agustina holds an S.S. in English Literature from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, and an M.A. in American Study from Universitas Gadjah Mada. Since 2009, she has taught in English Literature Study Program in Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. Her research interests include literary criticism, children’s literature, and literary literacies.

Ririn Kurnia Trisnawati, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman

Ririn Kurnia Trisnawati is a lecturer at Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. Her research interests are reader-response studies, postcolonial literature, noir genre, and Southeast Asian Literature in English.
